It is determination and will of the Workers’ Party of Korea to develop all sectors as quickly as possible and build a socialist power by dint of science and technology.
The DPRK did not present the policy of attaching importance to science and technology for the first time recently.
From the first days of building a new society, it put forward the work of developing science and technology as the fundamental issue vital to the rise and fall of the country and paid close attention to it.
It founded the then Academy of Sciences in December Juche 41 (1952) during the hard-fought Fatherland Liberation War decisive to the country’s destiny and thus laid a foundation for the development of science and technology. In every period and at every stage of the developing revolution, it has indicated the orientation and ways to developing science and technology of the country from the standpoint of Juche and wisely led the efforts to this end.
Regarding scientists and technicians as precious treasures of the country, it has given social prominence and preferential treatment to them and provided all conditions for scientific research and excellent living environment.
Thanks to this policy, the country which had been a backward, colonial semi-feudal state, turned into a socialist country, independent in politics, self-supporting in the economy and self-reliant in national defence, in a short period and developed into a manufacturer and launcher of artificial satellite, the acme of modern science and technology.
Today, the DPRK set the line of prioritizing science and technology as the strategic one for the building of a socialist power and put it forward as an important requirement to develop cutting-edge science and technology in the earliest possible date, raising the country’s science and technology to the world standard and guarantee the building of a socialist power by dint of science and technology.
Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un visited the State Academy of Sciences in January 2018 as his first field guidance of the year. He highly appreciated the achievements of scientists who have made big strides in their researches for the development of modern science and technology. One of the secrets that the Korean revolution has won victory after victory, braving all trials and difficulties, and the country has raised its strategic position remarkably is that primary efforts have been directed to developing science and technology, he said. And he stressed that the shortcut to making a breakthrough in implementing the five-year strategy for national economic development, enhancing the independence and Juche character of the national economy and improving the people’s living standards is to give precedence to science and technology.
At the historic April Plenary Meeting of Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea he set forth the strategic slogan “Let us make a leap forward by dint of science and guarantee the future by dint of education!”
True to his noble intention, the sector of science and technology produced many valuable findings conducive to the development of cutting-edge industries and revitalization of production.
In the course of implementing one thousand and hundreds of plans for development of national science and technology including priority tasks of the country, many sci-tech achievements have been made, contributing to building up the independence and Juche character of the national economy and improving the people’s living standards.
The Kim Chaek and Hwanghae iron and steel complexes and other several units introduced advanced technologies to build up the foundations of metallurgical industry, and the sector of electric-power industry solved sci-tech problems arising in increasing the generation capacity. The agricultural sector bred a new strain of rice with strong salt-resistance and other high-yielding, superior strains of paddy and dry-field rice, and the forest sector designed and manufactured equipment for producing seedlings two times and established a method of nutritive management.
Scientists in the sector of science and education, including Kim Il Sung University, the State Academy of Sciences and Kim Chaek University of Technology, developed and introduced technologies of challenging the world by waging a dynamic campaign to push back the frontiers of science and technology and submitted for publication many academic papers in authoritative international academic journals. Marquis Who’s Who selected three scientists of Kim Il Sung University as the best scientists in 2018.
Rapid development of science and technology is giving strong impetus to developing all sectors, including industry, agriculture, public health, physical culture and sports, literature and the arts.
This year too, the Korean people, regarding science and technology as the driving force for development and leap forward, are making strenuous efforts to expand the country’s capability of independent development to open up bright prospects for taking a step forward towards socialist construction, under the unfurled banner of self-reliance.
